What is Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)?
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), also known as E321, is a synthetic antioxidant widely used in food, cosmetics, and industrial products. It is a white crystalline solid derived from toluene and is widely used as a preservative to prevent oxidation in various products. Butylated Hydroxytoluene is a synthetic antioxidant compound with the chemical formula C₁₅H₂₄O. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), butylated hydroxytoluene is approved to be used in food. BHT has also been evaluated by relevant regulatory authorities like JECFA, IFRA, ECHACHEM, NIST, and WHO.

CAS No.: 128-37-0
According to the American Chemical Society, the CAS number of butylated hydroxytoluene is 128-37-0.
Chemical Formula: C15H24O
E number: E321
According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), butylated hydroxytoluene is designated as food additive E321. Butylated hydroxytoluene is a versatile antioxidant and industrial ingredient due to its unique properties.
Bulk Butylated Hydroxytoluene Manufacturers
Top butylated hydroxytoluene manufacturers include some companies in the United States, Germany, Spain, and China. Large companies like BASF operate globally, supplying different grades of butylated hydroxytoluene to various industries worldwide.
Sinofi is a bulk butylated hydroxytoluene manufacturer in China, and we have a manufacturing facility with 2,500 square meters for the production of butylated hydroxytoluene E321. We supply high-quality BHT at bulk prices for our clients in the food, pharmaceutical, feed, and personal care industries.
Manufacturing Process of Butylated Hydroxytoluene
The manufacturing process for butylated hydroxytoluene typically involves the following steps:
- Alkylation of toluene with isobutylene to produce p-tert-butyltoluene.
- Oxidation of p-tert-butyltoluene to form p-tert-butylbenzyl alcohol.
- Dehydrogenation of p-tert-butylbenzyl alcohol to produce p-tert-butylbenzaldehyde.
- Hydroxylation of p-tert-butylbenzaldehyde to create butylated hydroxytoluene.
This process may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and specific technology used.
Bulk Butylated Hydroxytoluene Suppliers
Butylated hydroxytoluene suppliers play crucial roles in ensuring a steady and reliable supply of butylated hydroxytoluene to food, feed, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other industries. Top suppliers like BASF produce high-quality butylated hydroxytoluene and distribute it directly to large industrial customers or regional distributors. At the same time, some other suppliers may offer value-added services that blur the line between distribution and formulation.
Sinofi is a bulk butylated hydroxytoluene supplier in China, and we have a warehouse with 1,200 square meters for high-quality butylated hydroxytoluene E321. We supply different grades of butylated hydroxytoluene at wholesale prices to various industries around the world.
Supply Chain of Butylated Hydroxytoluene
The BHT supply chain involves several key steps:
- Raw material sourcing (toluene, isobutylene, etc.).
- BHT Manufacturing.
- Quality control and testing.
- Packaging.
- Distribution to industrial customers, food manufacturers, and cosmetic companies.
- Integration into various products.
The supply chain for butylated hydroxytoluene is quite complex, with interconnections between various players. The roles can sometimes overlap, particularly with larger companies that may handle multiple aspects of production and distribution.
Wholesale and Buy Butylated Hydroxytoluene in Bulk
Buying butylated hydroxytoluene wholesale requires careful consideration of quality, pricing, and regulatory compliance. By understanding the market dynamics and following best practices, businesses can secure a stable supply of this important antioxidant at competitive prices. The wholesale market of butylated hydroxytoluene is influenced by factors such as:
- Raw material prices (particularly toluene and isobutylene).
- Global demand from various industries.
- Regulatory changes affecting BHT usage.
- Technological advancements in production processes.
As a bulk butylated hydroxytoluene manufacturer and supplier in China, we supply high-quality butylated hydroxytoluene powder to large food manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies worldwide. To serve them, we can wholesale high-quality butylated hydroxytoluene at bulk prices and provide a one-stop purchasing service as they require.
Butylated Hydroxytoluene Prices (USD/Kg)
Food Grade Butylated Hydroxytoluene Price (Purity>=99.5%)
| Volume | Unit Price | Shipment |
| 50g | 6 USD | Express |
| 500g | 15 USD | Express |
| 1Kg | 25 USD /Kg | Express |
| 20Kg | 20% cheaper | Express |
| 100Kg-Above | negotiable | Express / Sea |
Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) prices may vary significantly depending on purity, quantity, and specific supplier agreements. They can fluctuate based on market conditions, raw material costs, and demand. The true cost of BHT extends beyond the base price quoted by butylated hydroxytoluene suppliers. By considering all aspects of pricing, including shipping and long-term value, BHT buyers can make more informed decisions.
Furthermore, the above price quotations of butylated hydroxytoluene, especially for small orders, do not include the express shipping fee. The reason is that the shipment cost of butylated hydroxytoluene E321 may exceed the value of the sample. However, the bulk wholesale prices of butylated hydroxytoluene will be much lower than those of small orders. Please contact us for more details.

Butylated Hydroxytoluene Used in Food
A Roasted Pepper Sauce – Formulation by Weight
The method includes the following steps:
- Raw material pretreatment: 20kg of chili pepper and 80kg of erjingtiao pepper were washed and impurities were removed, and soaked in a soaking liquid for 1 hour to obtain a pretreated raw material (the soaking liquid was prepared by mixing and dissolving 1kg of maltodextrin, 1kg of sucrose, 1kg of salt and 80kg of water at 42°C);
- Drying: The pretreated raw material was dried at a temperature of 150°C until the dehydration rate of the pepper raw material was 30%, and a sodium alginate solution with a concentration of 2% was evenly sprayed on its surface. After spraying, it was placed at 60°C for drying until there was no moisture on the surface of the pepper, and dried pepper was obtained.
- Pretreatment: The dried pepper was placed in a water-free and oil-free pot, and the temperature was controlled to 120°C, and dry-fried for 5 minutes until the surface of the pepper was tiger-skin-like, and pretreated pepper was obtained.
- Stir-frying: Add 60kg rapeseed oil to the pot, heat to 160℃, add pre-treated peppers, 1kg butylated hydroxytoluene, salt, and MSG, control the temperature to 160℃, and stir-fry for 4 minutes to obtain stir-fried peppers.
- Packaging and sterilization: After packaging the stir-fried peppers, place them at 121℃ for 20 minutes to obtain the finished product.
