What is Carrageenan?
Carrageenan is a natural polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed (Rhodophyceae). It is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Carrageenan has Kappa, Iota, and Lambda types. Each type has distinct properties suitable for different applications. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), carrageenan is approved to be used in food.

CAS No.: 9000-07-1
According to the American Chemical Society, the CAS number of carrageenan is 9000-07-1.
E number: E407
According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), carrageenan is approved as E407 food additive in the food industry. Carrageenan is a versatile natural thickener due to its unique properties.
Bulk Carrageenan Manufacturers
Top carrageenan manufacturers include some companies in the United States, Philippines, Indonesia, and China. These carrageenan manufacturers have manufacturing facilities in seaweed-producing countries. They often serve as both manufacturers and suppliers. The global carrageenan market is dynamic, with production capacities potentially changing as companies invest in new facilities or optimize existing ones. Factors such as seaweed availability, technological advancements, and market demand can all influence a company’s production capacity over time.
Sinofi is a bulk carrageenan manufacturer in China, and we have a manufacturing facility with 2,500 square meters for the production of carrageenan E407. We supply high-quality carrageenan at wholesale prices for our clients around the world.
Manufacturing Process of Carrageenan Powder
The manufacturing process for carrageenan powder typically involves the following steps:
- Harvesting: Red seaweed is collected from ocean farms or wild growth.
Cleaning and Sorting: Seaweed is washed and sorted by type. - Alkaline Treatment: Seaweed is treated with an alkaline solution to extract carrageenan.
- Separation: Carrageenan is separated from cellulose and other components.
- Purification: Crude carrageenan is purified through filtration and centrifugation.
- Drying: The purified carrageenan is dried and ground into powder.
Bulk Carrageenan Suppliers
Carrageenan suppliers often include most large manufacturers as well as some chemical distributors. Many top suppliers are vertically integrated. They often control multiple stages of the carrageenan supply chain, from seaweed cultivation to final product distribution. Some carrageenan suppliers form strategic partnerships with food manufacturers or other ingredient companies.

Carrageenan prices can vary based on the specific type of carrageenan (kappa, iota, or lambda) and the quality of the product. Carrageenan has seen significant price fluctuations in recent years due to various market factors. While the base price of carrageenan remains a crucial factor, savvy buyers must consider the total cost, including shipping, quality assurance, and long-term supply stability, when making purchasing decisions in this dynamic market.
Furthermore, the above carrageenan price quotations, especially for small orders, do not include the express shipping fee. The reason is that the shipment cost of carrageenan E407 may exceed the value of the sample. But the bulk wholesale carrageenan prices will be much lower than those of small orders.
