What is Natamycin?

Natamycin (also known as pimaricin) is a naturally occurring antifungal compound produced by the bacterium Streptomyces natalensis. It is widely used as a food preservative and in pharmaceutical applications. Natamycin belongs to the polyene macrolide class of antimicrobials. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), natamycin is approved to be used in the food industry. Natamycin has also been evaluated by major regulatory bodies like JECFA, ECHACHEM, EUR-LEX, and WHO.

Manufacturing Process of Natamycin

The manufacturing of natamycin is a complex process including fermentation and downstream processing.

Fermentation Process

Microorganism Selection

The primary microorganism used for natamycin production is Streptomyces natalensis. Some manufacturers also use related species such as S. chattanoogensis or S. gilvosporeus. The selection of high-yielding strains and their maintenance is crucial for efficient production.

Media Preparation

The fermentation medium typically contains:

  • Carbon sources: glucose, maltose, or starch.
  • Nitrogen sources: soybean meal, corn steep liquor, or peptone.
  • Mineral salts: K₂HPO₄, MgSO₄, NaCl, FeSO₄.
  • Trace elements: zinc, copper, and manganese salts.
  • pH adjusters to maintain optimal conditions (pH 6.5-7.0).

Fermentation Conditions

  • Temperature: 28-30°C
  • Dissolved oxygen: >30% saturation
  • Agitation: 200-300 rpm
  • Duration: 5-7 days
  • pH control: 6.5-7.0 through automatic addition of acid/base

Downstream Processing

Biomass Separation

  • Centrifugation or filtration to remove cell mass.
  • Clarification of the fermentation broth.

Extraction

  • Solvent extraction using butanol or methanol.
  • pH adjustment to optimize extraction efficiency.
  • Multiple extraction stages to improve yield.

Concentration

  • Vacuum evaporation of organic solvents.
  • Crystallization of crude natamycin.

Purification Steps

  • Recrystallization using appropriate solvents.
  • Ion exchange chromatography for high-purity grades.
  • Activated carbon treatment for decolorization.

Final Processing

  • Crystallization under controlled conditions.
  • Filtration and washing of crystals.
  • Drying under vacuum at a controlled temperature.

Success depends on maintaining optimal conditions at each stage while ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory requirements. Continuous monitoring and process optimization are essential for efficient production at an industrial scale.

  • Advanced Fermentation Technologies: Implementation of controlled fermentation processes using advanced bioreactors and monitoring systems.
  • Quality Control Measures: Integration of sophisticated analytical techniques and quality management systems to ensure consistent product quality.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Development of eco-friendly production processes and waste reduction strategies.

Bulk Natamycin Suppliers

The global natamycin supply is evolving with increasing demand and stricter quality requirements. While established natamycin suppliers like DSM maintain leadership in premium markets, emerging suppliers from Asia are gaining market share through competitive pricing and improving quality standards. Natamycin buyers must carefully evaluate suppliers based on their specific requirements, considering factors beyond price, such as quality consistency, regulatory compliance, and technical support capabilities.
Sinofi is a bulk natamycin supplier in China, and we have a warehouse with 1,200 square meters for high-quality natamycin E235. We supply different grades of natamycin powder at bulk prices to food and pharmaceutical manufacturers worldwide.

Supply Chain of Natamycin

The natamycin supply chain represents a complex network of raw material suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and end-users that ensure the efficient production and distribution of this ingredient. Success depends on the effective management of material, information, and financial flows while maintaining quality and regulatory compliance.

Natamycin Used in Food

A Method for Making Raspberry Wine – Formulation by Weight

The method includes the following steps:
Select fresh raspberries, wash them, soak them in salt water for 10 minutes to remove the bitterness, then rinse them and drain the water.

Raw material pretreatment

Mix raspberries, blackberries, wolfberries, mulberries, and blackcurrants and beat them into a slurry; add c composite enzymes for enzymolysis. The composite enzyme addition amount is 0.25% of the weight of the raw material slurry, and the enzymolysis conditions are: enzymolysis at 52°C for 1.8 hours to obtain an enzymolysis solution.

The mass ratio of the raspberries, blackberries, wolfberries, mulberries, and blackcurrants is 11:2:0.8:0.8:0.8, and the raspberries, blackberries, wolfberries, mulberries, and blackcurrants are added with water and then beaten with a pulper to obtain a slurry.
The weight ratio of the fruit to the water is 1:25.
The amount of the composite enzyme added is 0.1-0.3% of the weight of the raw material slurry.
The mass ratio of the composite enzyme is pectinase: cellulase (4:1);
The enzymolysis condition is enzymolysis at 48-58°C for 1.5-2.5 hours.

Preparation of fermentation

  1. Raw materials: Sugar and natamycin are added to the enzymolysis solution, and the amount of sugar added is 250g/L; The amount of natamycin added is 0.15g-0.35g/L; After mixing evenly, the raspberry wine fermentation raw material is obtained.
  2. Fermentation: Saccharomyces cerevisiae is inoculated into the fermentation raw materials for fermentation. The specific conditions of the fermentation are: fermentation at 25°C-35°C for 25- 45 days, preferably at 30°C for 25 days, and after the fermentation is completed, the fermentation liquid is filtered to obtain the raspberry wine.

In conclusion, natamycin’s versatile applications and proven benefits make it an invaluable compound across multiple industries. Its natural origin, safety profile, and effectiveness continue to drive its adoption in new applications. As a bulk natamycin manufacturer and supplier in China, we sell different grades of natamycin at bulk prices to large manufacturers and small customers worldwide.
